CAMPAIGN FROM HOME You can join our army of letter writers without leaving home! Letter writing can really help to get the message across. Don’t ever think that your one letter can’t possibly help. Collectively our letters can make a difference. Remember that we are writing on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves. Don’t they deserve our help? Here are a few tips for campaign letter writing: Choosing your issue : You may find one of our campaigns of particular interest or you might feel strongly about something you see on television, in the print media or even in your own neighbourhood. Accuracy : Do your homework first and make sure any claims you make are accurate. Make sure suggested solutions are credible and practical. Be polite : Your letter will loose credibility and harm our cause if it is abusive in any way. No matter how strongly we feel, we must remain diplomatic at all times Stick to the point : Focus on one our two issues per letter. Be brief : If you write much more than a page people simply won’t read it Presentation : A typed letter is preferable. If you handwrite your letter make sure it’s legible. Check that the spelling is correct including the person’s name. Make sure their title is correct. Don’t use coloured stationery. Treat your letter like a business letter. Letters to the Editor : Make sure you follow the protocol required by newspapers and magazines including maximum number of words. If you’re responding to an issue in the newspaper it’s important to send your letter within 1-2 days.
